Getting my MoJo back, pt. 1

Part one in project MoJo [JoJo] (for those who appreciate cartoon references) started when a good friend of mine let me borrow his digital camera to take pics around my side of town for an office photo contest.

Observe:

It was a great feeling, being back on the block with a camera in one hand, a tripod in the other and an extra lens in my purse. I was taking shots around downtown for hours but barely noticed. I felt like a fish who somehow had got acclamated to living out of water only to be reintroduced to a pond years later. And the fact that there was a refreshingly cool breeze blowing that night made me feel that much more alive. I used to photograph all the time...How on earth did that get away from me?

Oh, that's right, I almost forgot. I received a scathing review from a photo prof at USC during my sophomore year. Amidst trying to defend my creative ideas, I stood there in front of the entire class and got bombed on for an hour. A few loyal classmates tried to throw in some positive commentary like a life jacket to a kid on the Titanic. Needless to say, the damage was done. Tired, furious, embarrassed (which I HATE) and discouraged, I literally did not touch my camera for two years. I did pick it back up to complete a great photo project during my senior year, but never really got back into the swing of things.

Fast forward to Christmas day, 2007. I receive my very own Canon Rebel XTi, and great is my joy. The breeze is blowing and the fish is in the pond again.

Take that, Mrs. What's-her-face.
